Alimo Studio Notes #19 [Light, Shadows, Art, and heads down painting]
Heads down in the studio painting, forever chasing light, and thinking
Hey friends, Happy Friday! Been getting groovy all week painting. Some meetings here and there, but honestly, heads down on this new body of work. Some are feeling sooo good, while others have challenged me big time. You add one brushstroke, and boom, the whole painting changes. Whether that’s good or bad, being confident in each brushstroke has been a lesson every time I paint. All I can say it’s been incredibly vulnerable sharing this work on social media with you all since this is very new for me and the world. I appreciate you all joining me on this chapter. The overwhelming support so far has been encouraging, and I can’t thank you enough.
Outside of painting, I’ve been walking around the city to clear my head, yoga, hang with friends, and generally occupying myself with events as much as possible. Being on my own painting, you have dialogue with yourself pretty much the majority of the day. It’s a silo in many ways, so when I see friends, I’m ready to socialize.
This week in NYC has been beautiful weather and looking forward to some beach days this weekend to reset and surf with friends.
Painting
As I’ve switched gears and moved away from the computer on this series. It’s taught me the command Z is not available. This isn’t new for me, as I’ve been painting for a long time, but this evolution of going directly to paper rather than exploring color options on the computer has forced me to trust my color theory and instincts when painting. Not all work, but a good mental game on mixing colors and painting from the inside without influence from the internet.
While I still use the computer daily, I have explored my work with examples of shadows and light. How other artists use this dynamic to show movement and to get ideas across with simple methods, playing with the sun. This has been impactful for me to pull from.
Both worlds are amazing and plan on using every tool out there to explore. When I wrap up this series, I plan on tying these paintings with technology to add a layer to the dialogue.
Below are a few new ones for the week!
Shoutouts ❤️
Wanted to give flowers to the legend Gabriele Münter for inspiration. Her movement, simplicity, and flow is incredibly inspiring.
That’s it for the week friends. Please leave a comment, like, or share if you find this interesting. Stoked to have you all here :)
I wanted to write more interesting but “It’s taught me the command Z is not available” made me laugh so much because wow it hurts at the beggining 🤣
